Episode 15: Mother Daughter Magic Part I

This week I am joined by Dr. Debbie Salas-Lopez. Dr. Salas-Lopez, MD, MPH is the Senior Vice President of Community and Population Health at Northwell Health. Academically, she was a professor of medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine and the College of Public Health, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Salas-Lopez is a nationally recognized speaker and educator in women leaders in medicine, healthcare disparities and equity in care, cultural awareness and language-appropriate services, and the impact of social and economic factors on health. In 2021, Modern Healthcare named her to its annual Top 25 Women Leaders as a “Woman to Watch.” She also received the 2021 Tribute to Excellence in Health Care award from the United Hospital Fund.

In this episode we talk about growing up in a religious household & the silence around sex education, becoming a mother and choosing to raise children with honesty and openness about sex, the power of creating safe spaces for kids to ask questions, how being a doctor helped prepare Deb with the resources to educate, walking the line of creating age-apprirate sex education moments at home, the long term relationship benefits of creating a foundation of trust and mutual respect between parent and child, what role grandparents can play in the sex education of their grandkids, and more.

You can follow Dr. Salas-Lopez and her work on LinkedIn and on Instagram @Debbiesalaslopez.
